5 Safety Tips for Beginner Motorcycle Riders

Riding a motorcycle is a fun and exhilarating way to get from point A to point B. However, owning a motorcycle is also a mighty responsibility! If you are a beginner motorcycle rider, keep these crucial safety tips in mind every time you ride, and you’ll enjoy your bike for years to come.

Be Very Visible

As a motorcyclist sharing the road with drivers of passenger cars, you’re inherently less visible than those on the road with you. Increase your visibility by wearing brightly colored protective gear and turning on your headlights in dark or cloudy conditions.

Gear Up!

Speaking of protective gear, don’t ride until you put on the following:

  • A full-face motorcycle helmet
  • A leather jacket
  • Full-length pants
  • Boots
  • Gloves

According to motorcycle accident statistics, thousands of bikers die every year in auto accidents due to the lack of a helmet. Even if you’re confident in your riding abilities, you should prioritize safety and protection just in case someone else on the road causes a crash.

Check the Weather

Before you go out for a ride, check the weather forecast in your area. Rain and snow can prove difficult to navigate—and when you’ve only got two wheels, the risk of getting into an accident is much higher. Avoid riding your motorcycle when rain, ice, and snow are in the forecast.

Inspect Your Bike

Make sure you properly inflate your tires and that your mirrors and lights are in good working condition before you take your bike out for a spin. Just like with driving a car, adjusting your mirrors while you’re in motion can prove to be a dangerous distraction!

Stay Alert

When you’re riding a motorcycle, you need a keen awareness of the other vehicles on the road at all times—after all, you may be in other cars’ blind spots. Be particularly careful when changing lanes, making turns, or riding on uneven roads.

In addition, don’t go out on your bike if you’ve been drinking alcohol or using recreational drugs. Intoxicated driving or riding creates dangerous situations for everybody on the road.

If you’re a beginner motorcycle rider, these safety tips will ensure you get years of enjoyment out of your bike. Owning and riding a motorcycle is a thrilling and rewarding pastime, but it’s even better when you make responsible, safe decisions!
