Different Types of Tire Tread Designs

Your car can only go as far as your tires will let you. And if those tires betray you, you’ll have a one-way ticket to nowhere. Finding which tire tread designs are best amongst the different types of tires will help you find a perfect pair and get back on the road.

Asymmetrical Tires

An asymmetrical tire tread design is multi-purposeful because it has two distinct patterns on the tire. One part of the tread is for all-season performance, whereas the other tire tread designs allow for a smooth and quiet ride.

Most of these tires have various tread patterns for the inner and outer sections, but the premier tires will use more effective rubber compounds to improve traction. Installation of these tires is foolproof, considering there are clear instructions on the rubber to tell you where it goes.

Directional Tires

Directional tires are  unique in that they spin in only one way. Even though they only go in one direction, it doesn’t mean you cannot drive in reverse. Instead, it relates to the configuration of the tire and how you mount the tire on the vehicle. You usually won’t see directional tires on your everyday sedans because they typically only appear on high-performance vehicles.

These tires provide drivers with superior handling due to their improved traction, whether the road is slippery or not. They can reduce the chances of hydroplaning thanks to their V-shaped design. Directional patterns work well for winter and summer as they can handle all kinds of terrain.

Asymmetric Directional Tires

If you want the best of what asymmetrical and directional tires have to offer, one option combines elements of each. It’s extremely rare to find these hybrid tires cruising through your neighborhood, so you might have to visit your local racetrack to see these marvels of science and technology.

Generally, asymmetric directional tires lose their tread faster than others, but anyone using them doesn’t care about their longevity as long as the tires contribute to otherworldly driving performance.

Symmetrical Tires

The most prevalent tread pattern you’ll see on tires is symmetrical. The inner and outer tread blocks of these tires have identical patterns. It’s crucial to rotate these tires consistently to achieve peak performance and increase the overall lifespan of the tires.

While most folks opt for symmetrical tires, it’s helpful to learn the different types of tire tread design when you are in the market for a new set. Before opting for an uncommon tire type, determine what kind of handling and maintenance suits your style as a car owner.
