Preparing Your Motorcycle for Cold Weather Riding

A motorcycle doesn’t offer the same protection against the weather when you ride it, but that doesn’t mean you can’t drive in less-than-ideal weather. Those cold days can be very taxing for you and your vehicle, but with the proper preparation, you can easily drive as you want. Here’s how you should get your motorcycle ready for cold weather.

Tires for the Cold

One of the most important changes you can make is buying specialty tires that can handle the cold. The cold can affect how tires grip the road and make driving more dangerous. However, cold tires can add more grip and give you more control when driving in the cold.

Earlier Nights

Nights come around a lot earlier as the weather gets cooler, so you may ride in the dark more often. Double-check all your lighting and swap to headlights that can light up the darker nights. This will greatly improve your safety when driving at night, which is just one reason why you should upgrade your motorcycle headlights.

Routine Maintenance

Maintaining your motorcycle regularly will help you prepare for the cold weather. Liquids freeze, and the snow and salt on the ground can easily damage your motorcycle. Always top off your liquids and switch to antifreeze substitutes to prevent issues later. You should also clean off your motorcycle frequently to prevent buildups

Warming Before Driving

Before you go driving on your motorcycle, pushing the motor too hard too early may cause heating issues and damage your vehicle. That’s why you should always warm up your motorcycle before heading out into the cold. This should only take a minute or two until the engine is warm enough to handle the cold, but it’s one of the most important things you can do to prepare your motorcycle for cold weather riding. These tips should help you when it comes to driving in the cold. Each one will allow you to maintain your vehicle and make driving safer for you while you’re on the road. This way, you can enjoy your bike no matter what time of year it is, as long as the weather isn’t too dangerous.
